Tamio Kurihara received a Dai Nippon Butoku Kai 1st Dan rank upon graduating from the Himeji Junior-high School in March of 1914. He then entered the Dai Nippon Butoku Kai Martial Arts School in 1915, and received a Dai Nippon Butoku Kai 2nd Dan ranking in August of that year. After entering Kodokan in January of 1917, Mr. Kurihara became an assistant instructor at the Jingu Kougakukan School in April of 1919. Then, in 1920, he took an assistant instructor post at the Martial Arts School, becoming a regular instructor the following year. In 1929, he won the "Selected Competitor" division of the Imperial Court Championships. He subsequently served as an instructor at the Third Higher School, Kyoto Imperial University, and with Kyoto Police Dept. Following the end of World War II, he taught judo at the Kyoto Police Dept. and at the Ritsumeikan University, etc. Mr. Kurihara later served in posts as the Kyoto Judo Federation Chairman, and All Japan Judo Federation Director, etc., leaving behind an impressive history of Judo instruction and promotion. In October of 1965, Mr. Kurihara received the Shiju Houshou (Purple Ribbon Medal), and he died on October 8, 1979 at the age of 84.
